Diabetes, The " Three Exhaustion " Symptoms

Risk Group
I Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus
( IDDM )
Age before 30 Family history of having diabetes, viral infections and disease of autoimmune system. Caused by attacks and destroys of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas by unknown factors of the body's immune system. May appears suddenly, signs and symptoms including:- Frequent urination, Extreme hunger, extreme thirst, extreme weight loss, weakness, tiredness, irritation, and nausea. (Due to hight level of sugar in both blood and urine.)
Complication: Diabetic ketoacidosis; coma; eye, feet, blood circular system, nervous system problems; skin and mucous membrane problems.
Injection of Insulin at certain intervals. Exercise, Diets, and other medication if necessary
II Noninsulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus
Age over 40 Overweight, emotional stress, family history, certain medications and food, pregnancy and physiology stress. Occurs mostly in severely overweight people Major symptoms including:- Increase thirst, urination and appetite, easy tired, frequent skin and bladder infection, blurred vision.
Complication: similar to Type I.
Exercise, Diets, Lifestyle adjustment and medication if necessary

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Adult Maternal Women Family history, obesity, previous abnormal birth wieght, death or malfunction of baby. Occurs first during pregnancy (apparent during 24th to 28th weeks) of some adult women.
Similar to type II.
Similar to Type II. The blood sugar level of most women will returns to normal after delivery.
Similar to Type II.

Diagnosis by Traditional Chinese Medicines: " The Three Exhaustion Symptoms ".

  1. The Upper Body Exhaustion Symptom -- Excessive Drinking (Polydypsia --Thirsty is the major symptom), due to exhaustion of body fluid ( Jin and Yue ) ,by excess heat of Lung (Lung-Fire) inside body to used-up more body fluid than usual, and patients start symptoms of weak and tired (Exhaustion of Qui -- the Bioenergy), and also starting increase appetite and urine. This symptom indicate the beginning of the diabetic symptom, if patient seek medical treatment at this state, the illness can be easier to treat.

  2. The Middle Body Exhaustion Symptom -- Excessive Eating (Polyphagia -- Easy get hungry -- the major symptom), due to access of heat of the Stomach, Spleen (Stomach Fire) and the Digestive System.

  3. The Lower Body Exhaustion Symptom -- Excessive Urination (Polyuria -- Excess of urine, weakness and exhaustion of the kidney yang and ying -- the major symptom), this is the worst state, patients are losing weight, very weak, and may have lots of complications, including impotency, extreme tiredness, hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic coma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, lower extremeties gangrene, diabetic nephropathy and neuropathy, heart and brain problems, etc.


Daily diet planning calculate with balance and consistency, especially with Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), to optimal control blood sugar level.

Food Not Good For Diabetes
  • Fat rich food -- such as butter, margarine, sausage, ice cream, nuts, fat meat, etc., should be avoid or reduce intake.
  • Food contain simple sugar (such as sugar, candy, syrup, honey, cakes, etc.).
  • Intake less of salt, alcohol, and quit smoking and avoid overeating.

Food For Diabetes
  • High-fibres and complex carbohydrates food
    Natural Vegetables -- green beans and peas, Jerusalem artichokes, cucumbers (cucumber contains hormonal substances help build pancreas' insulin producing cells), garlic and Onion (able to reduce blood sugar in diabetes),celery, spinach, tomato, beansprout, turnip, toufu, etc.
  • cereals, whole-grain breads and food -- such as buckwheat, millet, oats.
  • Milk Products -- skim and soured milk, yogurt, cottage cheese.
  • Fruit and fruit juice -- grapefruits, bananas, citrus, Water Melon, Winter Melon, strawberry, mulberry, etc. (Fruits contain sugar and fructose, which metabolise for energy without insulin.)
  • Chlorella and Green Tea -- these and most of above green food are alkaline food and best for diabetes patients.

(Consult with your doctor first when taking these herbs and vitamins)

  • Vitamins and Minerals -- Vitamin B Complex ( esp. Vitamin B12) and vitamin E ( these 2 vitamins and important to prevent gangrene of feet), vitamin C, Chromium and chromium rich yeast food (chromium help sugar metabolism), Magnesium, Vitamin A and Beta Carotene, Zinc and other trace elements.
  • Herbs
    1. Evening Primrose Oil (together with Vit. B Complex and Vit. E, to help treatment for gangrene of feet),
    2. Ginkgo biloba (together with vit. A, Vit. B complex, Vit. C and Magnesium, help treatment for diabetic retinopathy),
    3. Stinging Nettle (as an ingredient in various diabetic tea),
    4. Watercress, Jambolan, alfalfa,
    5. Fenugreek, bilberry and wild blueberry (help reduce blood sugar level),
    6. Gymnema,
    7. Goat's Rue (stimulates insulin production in the pancreas),
    8. Cactus pads ( this herbs was used by American Indian for hundred of years as diabetes   " cure " ).
Chinese Herbs
(Treatment when combination of different Chinese herbs and according to the diagnosis and symptoms)

  • Chinese Foxglove Root (生地),
  • Ginseng (人參),
  • Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng) (花旗參),
  • Astragalus (Huang-qi) (黃耆),
  • Dandelion (蒲公英),
  • Licorice Root (甘草),
  • Galangal (Chinese Ginger),
  • Kudzu ( 葛根),
  • Reishi ( 靈芝 ),
  • Thin Evodia (天花粉),
  • Dendrobium (石斛),
  • Figwort Root (玄參),
  • Red Sage Root (丹參),
  • Schisandra (五味子),
  • Dogwood Fruit (山萸肉),
  • Chinese Yam (淮山),
  • Ophiopogon Root (麥冬), etc.
Chinese Herbs Formula
(Diagnosis of the symptom is usually before taking the formulars.)
  1. Pig Pancreas Soup.
    A Pig pancreas (healthy and clean, cut to small pieces), Ginseng 10 gms or Prince Ginseng 18 gms., Chinese Yam 18 gms.
    Boil with low heat for 1/2 hours, drink the tonics 3-4 times a day.

  2. For Upper Body Exhaustion Symptom
    Kudzu 15 gms, Thin Evodia 10 gms, Figwort Root 10 gms, Chinese Foxglove Root 15 gms, American Ginseng 10 gms, Ophiopogon Root 10 gms, Licorice root 5 gms.
    Boil with low heat with water for 30 - 45 minutes, drink 1 - 2 times a day.

  3. For Middle Body Exhaustion Symptom
    Same as item 2, add Gypsum (medical grade) 20 gms, Atractylodes tuber (蒼術) 10 gms.
    Boil with low heat with water for 30 - 45 minutes, drink 1 - 2 times a day.

  4. For Lower Body Exhaustion Symptom
    Dendrobium 10 gms, Kudzu 15 gms, Schisandra 6 gms, Dogwood Fruit 10 gms, Chinese Yam 10 gms, Ophiopogon Root 10 gms, Chinese Foxglove Root 15 gms, Red Sage Root 10 gms, Ginseng 10 gms, Huang-qi 15 gms, Corktree Bark 4.5 gms.
    Boil with low heat with water for 30 - 45 minutes, drink 1 - 2 times a day.

  5. For patients with diabetic retinopathy or cataracts -- add Chrysanthemun (菊花) 6 - 10 gms, Pipewort Flower (谷精草) 6 - 10 gms, Lycium (枸杞子) 6 - 10 gms.

  • Physical Activity -- choose one or few that suitable and enjoyable for own's body fitness. Plan regular daily exercises, blood-glucose level monitoring before and after exercise, and brings food and snacks for diabetic patients in case blood-glucose levels drop too low. ( Monitoring Maximum Heart_Beat Rate for intensive aerobic exercise is necessary and safe, especially for diabeteic patients with hypertension and heart problem.)

  • 3_1_2 Exercise, plus Sanyingjiao Sp6, Taixi K3 and Zhaohai K6.
  • Standing Bioenergy Practice (for Type II diabetes), Sitting or Lying Bioenergy Quikung (for type I diabetes or weaker body state patients)

  • Bio_Massage (Help prevent diabetic retinopathy and cataract)

  • Foot_Massage (Expecially helpful to improve blood flow of capillaries and to preven gangrene of feet)

  • Recommandation for daily exercise -- Walking with moderate pace, twice a day for 1/2 hour, before and after meals, can help regular blood-glucose level.
    3_1_2 Exercise for 15-30 minutes or Standing, Sitting or Lying Bioenergy Quikung for 30 minutes (can choose 2 days practice 3_1_2 Exercise and 1 day Bioenergy Practice, or alternatively), to improve body strength and help regulate blood-glucose level.
    Perform Foot_Massage for around 10-15 minutes and Bio_Massage, once or twice a day.
